homeward bound

affordable housing for families and individuals

helping families find safe housing and stability

Founded with one single-family home in 1990 by a grassroots committee of community activists, Homeward Bound was first established as a transitional housing program for families experiencing homeless and domestic violence. In 2000, Homeward Bound opened the Thunderbirds Family Village, a five-acre housing campus in central Phoenix.

In 2024, Homeward Bound’s Thunderbirds Family Village merged with A New Leaf’s continuum of homeless intervention and prevention services. With 76 affordable 2-bedroom apartment units and on-site support services, A New Leaf continues to provide safe, long-term housing solutions for community members struggling with housing insecurity.

Housing units are reserved for households at or below 50% and 60% of the area medium income to support low-income families and individuals and those transitioning from homelessness. Housing is also accessible to households with City of Phoenix Section 8 Housing Vouchers and Rapid Re-Housing Vouchers.

On-site childcare is available at the Strong Foundations Early Learning Center, which helps families access affordable quality care for infants and preschool-age children with childcare assistance from the Department of Economic Security and First Things First, or low-cost tuition.

Onsite housing support services include enriching activities for children and families, employment coaching, financial literacy and budget coaching, parenting and life skills development, resources for household need and referrals for other community services.

Campus amenities include playgrounds, basketball court, outdoor fitness circuit, laundry facilities, gated parking, and secured pedestrian gate. The campus is also located within walking distance of schools, a Boys & Girls Club branch, shopping, and other resources.

Starr’s Story

Starr was in her mid-sixties when she became homeless, and it came as a shock. Bouncing from shelter to shelter, Starr tried to get back on her feet, but the constant moving and uncertainty made finding a job hard. The longer she was on the streets, the harder it was to find a place to live and work.
