What is the cost of the Program?
All fees including tests and study materials are covered, presuming students adhere to our attendance and code-of-conduct requirements. This program will cover the cost of two practice tests per subject and one official test per subject. If you require additional testing to pass a section (or fail to show up for a testing appointment) you will be responsible for paying for the next test ($41).
How will this Program prepare me to pass the GED test?
This program will prepare you to pass your GED by reviewing key topics in a classroom setting and by sharing testing techniques. The program is structured to focus on just one GED topic at a time. You will spend 3-5 weeks studying a subject and then immediately test on that subject. If you still need more help, there may be additional tutoring opportunities offered.
What Test do I have to take to pass to get my GED?
The Arizona GED requires you to pass 5 official tests: Reasoning through Language Arts; Mathematical Reasoning; Science; Social Studies; and Arizona Civics. Classroom instruction and testing schedule will focus on just one of these tests at a time. You will take each subject one at a time until the program covers all subjects.
Am I a good fit for this Program
The MesaCAN GED Program is fast-paced and aims to help students complete their GED in 5 months or less. Successful students are self-motivated and dedicated to showing up each night ready to learn. Reliable transportation is a must. All applicants are given a pretest to determine academic readiness.
You may be a good fit for the Program if you are someone looking to:
• Better your life and the lives of your family members
• Obtain a better job
• Join the military
• Gain entrance to a technical school or college
• Help you reach a personal milestone
What if I need more help than what the classroom is offering?
Private and group tutoring opportunities are offered by the program on a limited basis. Unfortunately, there will be some students who cannot successfully prepare for a specific section of the GED in the short time we have available. When this happens, we will attempt to find alternative resources to refer the student to.
A Friend/family member will be driving me to class. Can they wait in the building while I am in class?
Since classroom hours are after the MesaCAN building has closed, no one other than the student will be allowed in the building during class time – no exceptions.
Does the program offer an option for childcare while I am in class?
Unfortunately, this program has neither the license nor resources to provide childcare.
When are classes held?
Students meet 4 evenings a week (Monday – Thursday) from 5:30 to 8:30. We attempt to follow the Mesa Public Schools calendar for holidays and breaks.
I have passed two sections of the GED, do I have to take the full course?
No, you do not. We are happy to work with you to attain just the sections you are missing. You will only attend class when the sections you need are being presented.
What if I am advanced in one or more of the subjects? Can I work ahead?
We will test you at the beginning of each section to see how proficient you are with the topic. If you score high, you may be given the option to “test out” of that section, meaning you can proceed directly to the official testing and skip the classes for that section.
How important is attendance?
Attendance is critical. Students who have work or family obligations that prevent them from attending each night are not a good fit for this program. Missing one night of school in this program may be the equivalent to missing several weeks of a subject in a traditional four-year school.
Excessive absences may result in a student losing their free test voucher or being dropped from the program
Who is not a good candidate for this program?
If any of the following applies to you, this program may not be the best fit for you.
• Little or no working knowledge of basic computer skills
• Dependents at home who cannot be alone while you attend class
• Living far from our campus with no transportation
• Cannot speak/understand English
• Have severe anxiety that prevents you from being in a classroom setting with 20-25 others.
• Have severe testing anxiety that prevents you from sitting at a computer for up to 2 hours without a break.
Do you have remote or online classes?
No. All classes are in-person.
Do you have classes in Spanish?
No. All instruction is in English. However, official testing can be done in both Spanish and English.
How large are the class sizes? What is the make-up of the student body?
Class sizes will not exceed 25 students. We are happy to share that we have a wonderfully diverse population of students. We have students of all ages (18 and up) and from all walks of life. Our classes typically become a very tight-knit group.
Do I need a computer at home?
A computer at home is helpful for extra study in your free time, but not necessary. All work and learning will be done in class.
Will there be homework?
Not officially. However, the instructor may suggest videos or supplemental learning for students who could use some extra help and are willing to study on their own- which we highly encourage!
What if I have an IEP or need testing accommodations?
Testing accommodations can only be granted through GED.com who runs the official tests. We recommend that you reach out to them and work through the approval process before applying for this program as we have no ability to expedite those requests.
Are there age requirements for this program?
Yes. You must be at least 18 years old to participate.
