A New Leaf is proud to celebrate a remarkable milestone in our organization’s history: our CEO, Michael Hughes, has been named the recipient of the Phoenix Business Journal’s 2025 Nonprofit CEO Lifetime Achievement Award.

This prestigious honor is awarded each year to a nonprofit leader who demonstrates fearless leadership, builds strong partnerships, and develops innovative strategies that strengthen the community. Michael was selected from a pool of 70 nominees, a true testament to the profound impact of his leadership.

For 50 years, Michael has guided A New Leaf with vision and compassion, transforming it into a cornerstone of support for families across the Valley. Under his leadership, A New Leaf now offers nearly 40 programs that address domestic violence, homelessness, financial empowerment, and many other pressing community needs. His collaborative approach has united civic leaders, businesses, and nonprofits in advancing the mission of “Helping Families, Changing Lives.”

What began as a single shelter has grown into a network of nearly 40 programs, each designed to provide safety, stability, and hope for those facing life’s greatest challenges.

With more than 53 years of dedicated service to the Valley, Michael’s vision has shaped not only A New Leaf, but also the wider community. He has championed innovative approaches to addressing domestic violence, homelessness, financial empowerment, and other critical needs, ensuring that families and individuals can find the support they need to rebuild their lives. His ability to bring civic leaders, businesses, and nonprofits together has created partnerships that will continue to strengthen Arizona for years to come.

This year, A New Leaf is on track to impact over 23,000 lives; a milestone that would not have been possible without Michael’s steady guidance. His commitment to building a stronger, more compassionate community has left a permanent mark on the organization and the thousands of families who have found healing and hope through its programs.
