Foster Care Awareness Month 2025
Hello friends!
May marks the beginning of National Foster Care Awareness Month (NFCAM)—a time dedicated to recognizing the experiences of children and young adults in the foster care system, and the extraordinary people who step up to support them. NFCAM invites us to learn more about the foster care system, understand the unique challenges that foster children face, and work together to build a stronger, more compassionate safety net for vulnerable youth.
This month is also an opportunity to honor the foster parents, kinship caregivers, child welfare professionals, and community advocates who go above and beyond to provide children with safety, love, and stability. These heroes step into difficult situations with open hearts and create homes where healing and growth can happen.
One of those heroes is Andrea Bracamonti, whose life changed overnight in 2015 when she became the full-time caretaker for her niece and nephew, just as she was adjusting to life with her own newborn baby. We hope you take the time to read her incredible story in this blog.
At A New Leaf, we believe every child deserves a safe, nurturing place to call home and every caregiver like Andrea deserves support. Whether you choose to foster a child, donate to support vital services, or help raise awareness, your involvement makes a real difference.
This National Foster Care Awareness Month, we invite you to stand with us in supporting children in foster care and the families who care for them. Your kindness can be the turning point in a child’s life.
Sincerely,

A Family Rebuilt: Andrea’s Story of Love, Loss, and Resilience

Andrea Bracamonti’s life changed overnight in 2015 when she became the caretaker for her niece and nephew. She had just welcomed her own baby into the world and was adjusting to life as a new mom when everything shifted.
“I went from having one baby of my own to having three overnight,” Andrea shared. “They were just two and three years old, so they needed a lot of attention too. I had a full-time job and felt completely overwhelmed.”
Andrea stepped in to help her sister, who was going through a difficult time and had to give up custody of her children. At first, there was hope for reunification, and her sister visited the children regularly. But as time went on, Andrea realized she would need to take on the full and permanent responsibility of raising them.

“The Department of Child Safety placed them in kinship care with me through the foster system, but it felt like they were just dropped into my home without any guidance,” she explained. “There were no resources, and I didn’t know where to turn for help. I felt so lost.”
That’s when Andrea found A New Leaf, which provided foster aftercare programs, school assistance, and essential support to help her navigate her new role as a parent to three young children.
“The expenses were overwhelming, but A New Leaf was with me every step of the way,” Andrea said. “They helped me put food on the table and figure out childcare so I could keep working.”
Today, all three of Andrea’s children are thriving. Ten years later, her son and both her daughters have overcome their early challenges and grown into happy, resilient kids. They are a healthy family.

“They’re really great kids,” Andrea shared proudly. “They know their story started rough, but they also know it doesn’t define who they are. My daughter told me, ‘I know I have a biological mom, but I have a really good life because of you.’ That’s a beautiful thing to hear from a child.”
For Andrea, stability was the most important gift she could give. Now, she’s focused on watching her children grow and succeed.
“They’re setting goals, they’re thriving in school, and they’re happy,” Andrea said. “That’s all I could have ever hoped for.”
