A New Leaf began as a result of community efforts to address the escalating drug problems within Mesa Public Schools. In early 1971, Mesa Public Schools hired Dorothy Mitchell as a full-time Drug Abuse Consultant. Her responsibilities included involving the entire community in a drug-counseling program. By March 1971, Dorothy, Larry Simmons, and fifteen concerned citizens formed a service organization for the PREvention of drug use and the reHABilitation of drug abusers. A New Leaf of Mesa, was established as a nonprofit 501(c)3 in April 1971.
A New Leaf has continued to expand in response to community needs and offers the following programs to the community:
- Residential treatment services licensed for 65 emotionally
disabled children
- A North Central accredited education program
- Two outpatient counseling programs offering both office-based and in-home therapy
- Two domestic violence shelters with 38 crisis beds and 64 transitional beds
- Domestic violence support programs including the Safe Temporary Overflow Program (DV STOP) and non-residential case management for victims requiring support, but not shelter
- A community advocacy program and counseling services with Mesa Public Schools
- The Mayfield Alternative Youth Center (Mesa/East Valley) and the JAG Center (Glendale/West Valley) for juvenile status offenders
- La Mesita Family Homeless Shelter, providing services to homeless families with minor aged children
- Counseling for victims of sexual assault at Family Advocacy Centers located in Phoenix, Mesa and Glendale
- MesaCAN (Community Action Network) provides low-income Mesa
residents financial and case management services
- East Valley
Men's Center, providing shelter, basic needs and services to men
18 years and over
Operating under the guidance of a 30+ Board of Directors composed
of concerned community members, A New Leaf's 25 primary programs
served more than 30,000 children and adults during fiscal year
2007-2008.
